Barcelona's spending limit for the season has been cut down to just €270 million for the season by LaLiga.
LaLiga imposes strict spending controls to prevent clubs from overspending on player wages and transfers.
Barcelona in financial turmoil again
Barcelona's previous limit was €649 million, a figure made possible by the sale of future television rights income as part of a number of financial "levers".
The punishment for exceeding the limit is being put under LaLiga's spending cap, which allows the defaulting team to utilize around 50 percent of income toward improving their team until they make cuts to remain within it.
According to ESPN, the current situation means it is unlikely Barcelona will conduct significant transfer business in January, with further cuts needed if they are to be in a position to reinforce next summer.
