FIFA World Champions Chelsea drop €200 million on forwards this summer - but are they done yet?
Despite having already invested nearly €200 million (£170 million) in forwards this transfer window, €64.3 million (£55 million) on Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, €63.7 million (£54 million) on João Pedro, €35.5 million (£30 million) on Liam Delap, and €34 million (£29 million) on Estêvão (although the Brazilian's deal was agreed some time ago), Chelsea aren't done spending yet this summer.
According to Sky Sports Germany, the London club recently entered negotiations with RB Leipzig for Xavi Simons. Simons is reportedly unwilling to stay with the Red Bull-owned club next season due to their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The same source reports that the two clubs are working towards a verbal agreement and will hold another round of negotiations later today.
Leipzig are asking for at least €70 million (£60 million), but Chelsea are reluctant to pay that much. Last season, the 22-year-old winger cost Leipzig €50 million (£43 million) from PSG, so their aim is to make a profit of at least €20 million (£17 million).
If a deal can't be reached, several other clubs are keenly interested in the Dutch international, including Arsenal. However, Chelsea's priority for now appears to be securing Viktor Gyokeres.
In the 2024/25 season, Simons scored 11 goals and provided 8 assists in 33 appearances, all in the Bundesliga and German Cup. He failed to register a goal or assist in European competitions.
It's also worth remembering that Sporting CP sold Geovany Quenda to Chelsea for €52.1 million (€50.777 million upfront and €1.358 million in easily achievable add-ons).
The 17-year-old's transfer to the Club World Cup winners was officially announced in March, but he won't join the London side until the 2026/27 season.
