Ferdinand Omanyala Promises Sub-10 Comeback as He Eyes Kip Keino Classic Breakthrough
Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa's 100-meter record holder, will be looking to rediscover his form and hopefully break the 10-second barrier at the 2026 edition of the Kip Keino Classic on Friday, April 26.
Ferdinand Omanyala has since slipped to 58th in the World Athletics rankings, raising questions about his form ahead of key competitions.
Ferdinand Omanyala's last sub-10 performance came at the Silesia Diamond League on August 25, 2024, where he clocked an impressive 9.88 seconds for second place.
Since then, a combination of inconsistent form and injuries has hampered his progress. This period of struggle led him to part ways with coach Geoffrey Kimani in September 2025 and reunite with his original coach, Duncan Ayiemba.
His breakthrough moment came at the Kip Keino Classic on September 18, 2021, where he finished second to American Trayvon Bromell in a blistering 9.77 seconds. That performance shattered Akani Simbine's African record of 9.84 and remains one of the top 10 fastest times in history.
However, with the clock ticking towards his Commonwealth Games title defence in Glasgow, Ferdinand Omanyala is under pressure to rediscover his top form.
His comeback trail begins with the Addis Ababa Grand Prix in Ethiopia on Saturday, April 18, followed by the Kip Keino Classic. He hopes to use these events to once again run under 10 seconds.
Ferdinand Omanyala Confident Ahead of Kip Keino Classic
Speaking to Nation Sport, Ferdinand Omanyala expressed confidence in his preparation after a training block in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
"I am through with the cookery now. The food is ready, and it’s time to serve it… just come with a huge appetite," he said. "I am coming with speed... not IShowSpeed to the party."
"It was my first race of the season and it was more about perfecting my execution. I am feeling good," Omanyala stated. "People will really enjoy Addis and Kip Keino big time… I can’t wait to take to the blocks."
Ferdinand Omanyala kicked off his 2026 outdoor campaign with a victory at the Cape Miller Continental Tour in Stellenbosch on April 10, clocking 10.19 seconds in the 100m.
Omanyala also played a crucial role in securing Kenya's spot at the 2026 World Athletics Relay Championships, anchoring the 4x100m mixed relay team to a second-place finish behind Nigeria in Gaborone with a time of 41.70 seconds.
The Lefika Relays event served as a test run for the world championships, which will be held in Gaborone from May 2-3, 2026.
Ferdinand Omanyala Welcomes Floodlight Technique at Kip Keino Classic
The upcoming Kip Keino Classic will be a unique experience, held for the first time in the evening under floodlights. Omanyala acknowledged the potential for chilly conditions in Nairobi but remained optimistic.
"It could be late in the evening in Europe, but the sun is usually up compared to racing in Nairobi, which could be chilly," he explained. "However, a packed arena will make it warmer."
"I didn’t perform well in the indoor tour because I was returning from an injury. I competed based on how my body was feeling at the time, but all is well now," said Omanyala.
