Andrei Orlov, the former CEO of Russian club FC Sochi, has made sensational claims that ex-coach Robert Moreno relied on ChatGPT to make key decisions, including selecting starting lineups and approving player signings.

Moreno, 48, was dismissed from his role at the top-division club following a string of poor performances. However, Orlov has now suggested that the Spanish manager's over-reliance on artificial intelligence was a significant factor in his downfall.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper La Razón, Orlov detailed how Moreno's use of technology extended far beyond standard analysis. He alleged that the coach used AI for everything from team selection and transfer strategy to planning travel logistics.

Use of ChatGPT to Decide New Signings

One particularly alarming incident, according to Orlov, occurred before an away game against SKA Khabarovsk. Moreno allegedly used AI to generate a travel and training schedule that would have kept the players awake for 28 hours straight.

"I asked him, 'Robert, everything looks great, but when are the players supposed to sleep?' In the end, we followed the programme created by ChatGPT," Orlov stated. "It’s just another tool, why not use it? But for him, ChatGPT became one of the main ones."

Orlov also described an instance where the club was scouting for a new striker, considering players like Pisarsky, Meleshin, and Shushenachev. He claimed Moreno fed the players' statistics into ChatGPT, which recommended signing Shushenachev. The club proceeded with the transfer, which ultimately proved to be a failure.

Moreno Strongly Denies Allegations

However, Moreno, a former coach of the Spanish national team, has vehemently refuted the accusations. In a statement sent to La Razón, he dismissed the claims as baseless.

"I have never used ChatGPT (or any AI) to prepare matches, decide lineups, or choose players," Moreno declared as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. "Like any professional coaching staff, we use analysis tools (video, data, scouting) to organise information, but sporting and human decisions are always made by the coach and his staff."

Moreno managed Sochi from December 2023 to August 2025. During his time at the helm, the club was relegated from the Russian Premier League before securing promotion back to the top flight the following season.
