The controversial picture has ignited backlash from fans still mourning the 2000 deaths of two Leeds supporters in Istanbul.

Family photo sparks fan outrage

It all started with a seemingly innocent photo posted by Saara Sa, Ampadu’s former partner and mother of his son.

The image showed their child in a Galatasaray kit, a club forever linked to tragedy in the eyes of Leeds United fans.

Back in 2000, two Leeds supporters, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, were fatally stabbed in Istanbul ahead of a UEFA Cup clash with the Turkish side. Since then, Galatasaray has been a red flag for the Leeds faithful.

Leeds fans didn’t hold back, flooding social media with criticism and calling for Ampadu to be stripped of his captaincy.

The club responded swiftly, claiming Ampadu had "no responsibility" for the image and had separated from Sa months ago.

But Saara fired back, accusing the club of spreading lies and insisting Ampadu knew about the photo. She defended the post, stating her Turkish roots and long-standing family support for Galatasaray.

Ampadu, who joined Leeds in 2023, has been crucial to Leeds during their return to the Premier League. He even participated in memorials honouring the slain fans, which made the timing of the controversy especially sensitive.

Leeds have stood by their captain, asking for privacy and noting his commitment on and off the pitch. But for many fans, the optics of the Galatasaray connection, even indirectly, reopened wounds.
