Ethiopian Marathoner Dies During Training in Canada
The world of athletics is in mourning following the sudden death of Ethiopian long-distance star Yebrgual Melese.
The 36-year-old collapsed during a training session in Canada on Tuesday and passed away shortly after.
Melese, a celebrated winner of the Houston, Shanghai, and Prague marathons, was in the final stages of her preparation for the Ottawa Marathon on May 24, where she was a leading contender. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation confirmed the tragic news.
In a heartfelt statement, the federation paid tribute to one of the nation's most esteemed athletes.
"The Ethiopian Athletics Federation expresses its sorrow at the sudden death of this heroic athlete and offers its condolences to her family, friends, fans, and the entire sporting community," the governing body announced.
Cause of Death Still Unknown
According to reports from Addis Media Network, Melese experienced a medical emergency while training. She was rushed to a local hospital, but medical staff were unable to revive her. The specific cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Melese was a formidable force in distance running, boasting a personal best of 2:19:33 in the marathon, a time that placed her in the elite group of women to have broken the 2:20 barrier. Her international breakthrough came at the 2015 Chicago Marathon, a World Marathon Major, where she secured a second-place finish.
Her career was also marked by significant success over the half-marathon distance. She earned a bronze medal at the 2015 African Games in Brazzaville and claimed victories at prestigious events including the Lisbon Half Marathon and the Paris Half Marathon, which she won on two separate occasions.
Known for her tactical prowess and relentless pace, Melese was highly respected within the athletics community. Her signature racing style often involved conserving energy before launching decisive late-race surges that left her competitors behind.
