Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout will compete in the 200m and, in a surprising move, the 4x400m relay at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon this August.

The 18-year-old has opted not to contest the 100m, despite winning the national junior title in the event last month.

Gout is part of a record 75-strong Australian team heading to the prestigious event, which will be held at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene from August 5. The championships begin just three days after the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a factor that has influenced Gout's decision to prioritize the junior competition.

The young star, who holds the U20 world record in the 200m, aims to follow in the footsteps of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt, who launched his stellar career with a 200m gold at the same championships in 2004. Gout secured a silver medal in the event at the previous edition in Lima, Peru, in 2024.

"I'm really excited to get out there at World Athletics Under 20s," Gout stated as per ABC. "I know it's a great stadium and place to run fast, and I feel confident I'll be ready to step up and make Australia proud."

He added, "I'll be competing in the 200m, but I'm also excited to join in the 4x400m on the last day."

Gout's inclusion in the relay team comes just a week after Australia's senior men's 4x400m team won a historic bronze at the World Relays in Botswana, setting a new Oceania record of 2:55.20.

The large Australian U20 squad also features high jumper Izobelle Louison-Roe, who will be looking to improve on her silver medal from the 2024 championships. She is entered in both the high jump and triple jump and will make a final decision on her events later in the year.

Race walker Isaac Beacroft is another athlete set for a busy schedule, as he will compete in both the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the U20 world titles.

"I've got pretty high expectations of myself in both races, and I don't want to leave that short amount of time in between each event as an excuse for my performances," Beacroft said.

The Australian team will be aiming to build on its record-breaking performance from two years ago in Lima, where they secured a total of 15 medals.
