Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has praised Cristiano Ronaldo's commitment and humility while leading the national team.

Roberto Martinez was appointed Portugal head coach in the wake of Fernando Santos' sacking after their elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Martinez has brought out the best in Cristiano Ronaldo and has a perfect record with A Selecao, helping them qualify for the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.

They did so in style, winning all eight of their qualifying games, scoring 32 goals and conceding only two.

The former Belgium manager has recalled his first meeting with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, revealing his surprise at how humble the legendary forward was from the first day.

"When I met Cristiano, I found he was a player who was eager to continue giving everything for the national team."

"The truth is that I was very surprised that he had that humility and that desire to serve the group. 

"That was the starting point and the foundation of all the players who have entered this locker room."

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to his absolute best under Martinez, scoring nine goals in seven games under the Spaniard.
