United States forward Folarin Balogun earned rave reviews for his performance in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador, with ESPN analyst and former USMNT striker Herculez Gomez describing it as the Arsenal academy product’s “coming out game” for the national team.

Balogun, who currently plays for AS Monaco, opened the scoring for the USA and impressed with his intelligent off-the-ball movement, sharp positioning, and composure in front of goal, a display Gomez believes firmly establishes him as the nation’s first-choice striker ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What Gomez said

“Folarin Balogun had a coming-out game, if we could call it that,” Gomez said on his YouTube channel.

He added, “He’s been giving us glimpses of how good he can be, how crisp, intelligent, and decisive his movements are. Right now, he’s in pole position as the No. 9 heading into the World Cup. I thought he was brilliant.”

Gomez praised Balogun’s ability to challenge a well-organised Ecuador side, noting that the 23-year-old could have easily scored more on the night.

“I thought he was unlucky not to have more than one goal. He was a handful for a very stingy Ecuadorian defender, a team that in their last 11 games had conceded only one goal. Even with a few key absences, this is still an excellent Ecuadorian team, one that nobody wants to face come World Cup time,” Gomez added.

Struggles at Club Level

Balogun’s standout display for the USMNT came at a time when he had found life difficult in France. The American striker has scored only one goal for AS Monaco this season and is enduring a five-game goal drought across all competitions.

Still, his latest international showing may signal a return to form and confidence at a crucial time, both for his national team prospects and his club career.
