Akpom has been arguably the best player in England’s second division this season with Middlesbrough.

However, he was surprisingly omitted from Peseiro’s Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying doubleheader against Guinea-Bissau.

When asked why he did not call up Akpom, the Portuguese tactician said he does not rate the former Arsenal star.

However, Akpom showed why he deserved to be rated by Peseiro as he scored yet again in Middlesbrough’s clash against Huddersfield.

The 27-year-old, who is currently the top scorer in the Championship, added to his tally, although it was not enough to give Carrick’s men a win.

Akpom scored Boro’s second goal, his 25th in the league, but it was a bad day in general for Boro.

The away side needed a win to stay in the race for automatic promotion, and it looked like they would get the victory as Marcus Forss put them ahead two minutes before the break.

However, Huddersfield came out charging in the second half as they scored four goals, making Akpom’s strike a mere consolation.

The Terriers drew level a minute after the break through Josh Ruffels before Josh Koroma made it 2-1 eight minutes later.

Matthew Pearson extended Huddersfield’s lead in the 57th minute before scoring his second and the home side’s fourth of the game in the 66th minute.

Akpom reduced the deficit in the 74th minute, but it was a little too late as Huddersfield ran out 4-2 winners.

Nonetheless, the Super Eagles hopeful continued his impressive scoring streak in the Championship this season.

The result means Boro are now nine points behind Sheffield United in the race for the second automatic spot.
