Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Ghana’s Black Stars are set to reignite their storied rivalry later this year, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirming their participation in the highly anticipated Unity Cup 2025.

The invitational tournament, featuring Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago, will take place at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in West London, promising a week of thrilling football and cultural celebration.

The Unity Cup, returning after a 20-year hiatus, was finalised on Wednesday with all agreements signed, paving the way for the four-team showdown at the 17,250-capacity venue.

The tournament is scheduled for late May 2025, blending elite football with a vibrant showcase of African and Caribbean food, music, and comedy.

Rotimi Pedro of AfroSport, the event’s organisers, expressed excitement about the revival.

“We are proud to bring back The Unity Cup. It’s been a long journey to revive this important community event, and we’re delighted that fans of African and Caribbean football will once again enjoy top-tier international football at Unity Cup 2025,” Pedro said, per an NFF report.

The tournament kicks off on Tuesday, May 27, with Trinidad & Tobago facing Jamaica in the first semi-final, an unprecedented “Trini-Jam” clash on UK soil.

The following day, Wednesday, May 28, Nigeria’s Super Eagles, three-time African champions, will square off against Ghana’s Black Stars, four-time African champions, in a second semi-final steeped in 74 years of rivalry.

Known for its intensity, this matchup, often dubbed the “Jollof Derby” due to the nations’ culinary competition over the beloved West African dish, promises to captivate fans.

The action concludes on Saturday, May 31, with the third-place playoff featuring the semi-final losers, followed by the grand final to crown the Unity Cup 2025 champions.

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau highlighted the tournament’s significance for the Super Eagles.

“We signed on to the tournament as it offers a vital opportunity for our team to bond ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September. The Unity Cup has a special history, and the Super Eagles have always been part of that journey,” Gusau said.
