FIFA President Gianni Infantino has downplayed the significance of the Ballon d'Or award, suggesting that only FIFA has the authority to determine the world's best player.
Infantino made these comments during the 2024 FIFA The Best Awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar, where Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior went home with the ultimate prize.
Vinicius had an exceptional 2024 and was duly rewarded at FIFA's showpiece event.
Infantino emphasized the importance of FIFA's voting system, which he believes makes their award more credible. He stated:
"If you want to know the best in the world, it should be by FIFA.
🚨 Gianni Infantino: "If you want to know the best in the world, it should be by FIFA. Because everyone votes, it's transparent, it's objective, it's all-inclusive."

'In this award, everyone votes, it’s transparent, it’s objective, it’s all-inclusive."
Infantino's remarks come after the controversy surrounding the 2024 Ballon d'Or award, where Manchester City's Rodri edged out Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr.
Rodri's win sparked endless debate on social media and among the footballing community, with many insisting the Real Madrid man was robbed.
While not retaining the prestige of the Ballon d'Or, this award should go a long way in appeasing fans of the skillful Brazilian.
