Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has yet again affirmed his desire to get into club football management immediately after his stint with Kenya.

McCarthy, who has a contract with Kenya up to after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, is not keen to extend his stay with the East African nation beyond his current deal as he admits international football is not exciting him.

The 48-year-old South African says his experience with Harambee Stars has been eye-opening but playing a few matches in a year is not something that has filled him with joy as he enjoys the thrill of being on the training ground and touchline daily.

Why McCarthy is Keen to Leave in 2027

“This experience in Kenya has been unbelievable, remarkable, it has been nice but I think I am still too young to go so long without being active,” McCarthy told South African journalist Robert Marawa on his Marawa Sports Worldwide show.

“I am an everyday on the training pitch kind of person…smell the grass…I want to improve players and I feel that [national team job] is holding me back from doing that because you do not have enough time with players.”

McCarthy feels he has too much to give to his players but having the team for one week and playing two matches during international breaks is not challenging enough as he has little time to disseminate all that he has to his players.

“Like I have not seen them [for] three months and when I see them, I will only have a week to do what I can with them,” he added, explaining the frustrating part of his current job.

“No, I think when I get to Hugo Broos’ [Bafana Bafana coach] age, then I want to go back into the national team but after this experience with Kenya, I am really looking to get back into managing a club.”

This is not the first time McCarthy has expressed a desire to quickly return to club football management.

He has previously made it clear he would be open to taking over an African giant as well as one of the two big clubs in Scotland [Rangers and Celtic] while he is also ready to work in the English Championship as well as the MLS.
