Barcelona president confirms Super League rumours
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hinted at what many outlets have been reporting, that the Blaugrana are prepared to end their association with the European Super League, masterminded by Real Madrid's president Florentino Perez, and realign with UEFA.
Barcelona and Super League
In April 2021, Barcelona, under the outgoing Bartomeu regime but with the Laporta camp soon returning, were announced as one of the 12 founding clubs of the European Super League, citing an urgent need to protect financial sustainability and assert greater control over elite European football.
After widespread backlash, most clubs (especially from the Premier League and Serie A) withdrew within days; Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus were among the few still publicly committed.

Barcelona’s position at that time was that they would not renounce the project precipitously, arguing that any withdrawal should be subject to internal scrutiny and club membership assent.
Over time, as the Super League project lost momentum and key participants distanced themselves, the remaining support dwindled until only Barcelona and Real Madrid remained publicly attached.
Barcelona realigning with UEFA
In recent years, under Laporta’s renewed presidency, Barcelona have signalled a gradual realignment with UEFA structures, expressing a desire to rebuild institutional ties and even hinting at formally pulling out of the Super League concept altogether.
“There is a very good relationship with Nasser (Al-Khelaifi, president of the European Club Association),” Laporta told El Chiringuito, per Dario AS. “Barcelona are for the pacification of European football. We want there to be an agreement, and we will go back to UEFA. This is what all the clubs want. We also come here to generate good harmony and to be able to reach this agreement.”
