The League Cup elimination at the hands of Grimsby came after Manchester United had secured just one point from their first two Premier League matches, drawing 1-1 away at Fulham following a 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal.
Amorim took charge of the team in November 2024 but failed to reverse the poor start to the season. The team ultimately recorded its worst Premier League finish since the 1973/1974 season (15th place, 42 points).

Ahead of Saturday's game against Burnley, the Portuguese manager was asked if he believed he would still be leading the team after the international break, specifically on September 14th, when United face their city rivals at Manchester City's stadium.
“I don’t know what will happen. That’s my intention, but I’m not making any promises about the future. I am the manager of Manchester United, and I don’t think that will change,” stated the 40-year-old coach, who expressed confidence that the team can improve under his leadership.
“I’m being honest with you – sometimes I get so frustrated with the team that I think one thing [about leaving]; then (he smiled) I go back to my normal self. So I won’t promise anything, I’ll take it day by day. And I’m tired of saying, ‘I won’t behave this way or that way.’ I’m going to be who I am: passionate and in pursuit of success,” he explained.
Amorim was asked if he would be having discussions with Director of Football, Jason Wilcox.
“I always have conversations with them. I’m focused on this game and I need to live this day by day. I’m realizing that and I’m going to be like this all the time, so be prepared,” he warned.
“I’ve seen our players perform very well in difficult games. And I see it in training too. Training looks much better. In the last game (against Grimsby), I was shocked. That wasn’t our team or the way we want to present ourselves,” Amorim noted.
“We just need to win some games. So, we can’t change that fact. We have to focus on the next match, and if we start winning, things will become easier,” he concluded.
