Akani Simbine, Nadia Battocletti and Star-Studded Field Set for Showdown in Italy
The entry lists for this Saturday's Pegaso Meeting at the Ridolfi Stadium promise a thrilling day of athletics, with several world-class matchups scheduled across the sprints, middle-distance events, and throws.
One of the most anticipated events is the men's 100 meters, where South African star Akani Simbine, fresh off a successful World Relays campaign, will face Colombian talent Ronal Longa.
The stacked field also includes American Cravon Gillespie, German sprinter Joshua Hartmann, and reigning European 200m champion Timothé Mumenthaler.
Italian hopes will rest on Tommaso Fornesi, who joins his World Relays teammates Samuele Ceccarelli, Junior Tardioli, and Andrea Bernardi. Lorenzo Simonelli is also expected to compete.
Nadia Battocletti Headlines Women's 1500m
In the women's 1500 meters, all eyes will be on Nadia Battocletti, arguably the biggest name in Italian athletics today.
With no other athlete in the field boasting a comparable personal best, a paced race seems likely to help her target a fast time. Spain's Carla Masip is listed as the next fastest with a time of 4:10.08.
The throwing events will feature another major Italian star, as local favourite Leonardo Fabbri headlines the men's shot put. He will be joined by fellow countryman and rival Zane Weir, along with Riccardo Ferrara.
The men's 400 meters will see South African relay standout Zakithi Nene in action. Nene anchored his team to a silver medal at the World Relays with a blistering sub-44-second split. He will line up against Italy's Lorenzo Benati, who also competed at the global event.
A deep men's 800-meter field includes four athletes who have broken the 1:45 barrier: Spain's David Barroso (1:43.95), Morocco's Abdelati El Guesse (1:44.19), Italy's Simone Barontini (1:44.34), and Great Britain's Alex Botterill (1:44.75).
The women's 800 meters features British star Jemma Reekie, who owns a formidable personal best of 1:55.61. She will face compatriot Shakira King, Ethiopia's Tadalech Rwewa Hote, and Gloria Kabangu.
The women's 100 meters is set for a British showdown between Amy Hunt and Imani Lansiquot, with veteran Portuguese sprinter Lorène Bazolo also in the mix. Italian interest will focus on World Relays team member Irene Siragusa and Giada Carmassi.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Cuba's Roger Iribarne will take on Brazil's Eduardo Rodrigues. Italian hurdler Oliver Mulas, who recently clocked a 13.65 in Imperia, looks to continue his strong start to the season. Former national team athletes Hassane Fofana and Nicolò Giacalone are also entered.
The men's long jump will showcase a group of young Italian talents, including Aldo Rocchi, Samuele Baldi, and Federico Morseletto. Great Britain's Alessandro Schenini, who has a personal best of 8.00 meters, adds international quality to the competition.
In the women's high jump, NCAA standout Elena Kulichenko will compete against Italy's Idea Pieroni, with Marta Morara and Pamela Croce also in the field.
The men's javelin will be an all-Italian affair featuring Giovanni Frattini, Roberto Orlando, and Michele Fina, alongside prospects Pietro Villa and Pietro Colonnella.
However, Poland's Dawid Wegner, who has thrown over 85 meters in his career, starts as the clear favourite. Finally, Italian hammer thrower Sara Fantini is set to return to competition following her recent impressive mark of 73.40 meters.
