AFL: Mamelodi Sundowns thrash Wydad to cash out over N4bn as undisputed African champions

The team from the rainbow nation Mamelodi Sundowns proved too good for Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the AFL final.

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned the champions of the newly created African Football League, AFL.

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate to become the first-ever winners of the competition on Sunday.

In what turned out to be an enthralling affair, the South Africans put on a show to overturn a first leg deficit en route to an emphatic victory. 

Wydad defeated the Brazilians 2-1 in the first leg in Morocco but found the Absa Champions a hard nut to crack in the second leg played in Pretoria.

Two beautiful strikes from Peter Shalulile and Aubrey Modiba proved decisive as it inspired Sundowns to a comfortable 2-0 win.

Both goals were netted in either half as the hosts held on to thwart everything thrown at them by the stubborn Moroccans, including a close effort from Ayoub El Amloud late on.

With coach Rulani Mokwena pulling the strings from the dugout, the excellent Brazilians defended stoutly till the end to complete the job and become the first-ever winners of the AFL.

Sundowns go home millions richer

Following their win, Sundowns not only lifted the giant AFL trophy for their efforts but were rewarded handsomely.

The Brazilians will go home richer as the prize money for the winners is capped at $4 million, which is over four billion Naira. 

 The AFL, also known as the African Football League, is a competition for African elite clubs put together by the Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, in partnership with FIFA.

AFL, initially known as the Africa Super League, was organised to showcase the best of African club football and provide football fans in Africa the opportunity to see and enjoy the beautiful game.
