AFCON 2027: FKF Boss Explains Why Kenya Should Not Panic Despite Funding Delays
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed believes Kenya will still put up a spectacular 2027 Africa Cup of Nations amid reports that preparation is behind schedule.
Kenya is in a race against time following revelation that work on key infrastructure like stadiums and training facilities to be used for the tournament has stalled due to unavailability of funds.
The Ministry of Sports last week revealed that it has a shortfall of up to Ksh15 billion some of which is owed to contractors working on key facilities and work has stalled as they are demanding payment.
Kenya is also yet to pay a Ksh3.9 billion hosting fee to the Confederation of African Football, when its co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania have done so, casting doubts over its readiness for the tournament, but Mohammed is full of confidence.
“We still have adequate time to meet our obligations,” Mohammed said on Citizen TV.
Why FKF Boss is Oozing Confidence
“Last year when we hosted CHAN, towards the build-up to the tournament, there was a lot of negativity about our capacity and our ability to host CHAN and even to perform.
“The President came through in a big way and we surpassed all expectations,” said the FKF boss.
Mohammed points at recent events staged in the country with the backing from the government as enough proof that Kenya will meet its obligations even though all of them do not come close to the scale of AFCON.
“If you look at the big events that have happened in the last six months, all of them have been spectacular. Safari Rally, rugby HSBC SVNS 2, and athletics,” he further stated. “I have all the confidence that the country will be able to deliver on this.”
Mohammed is urging for patience from Kenyans regarding the AFCON 2027 preparations and has also called on the three East African countries to avoid budget cuts that would compromise the standards of the tournament.
