Later that day, Mali joined them after a tense penalty shootout victory against Tunisia. The Eagles showed remarkable resilience, holding on for the win despite being reduced to ten men for a significant portion of the match.

On Sunday, tournament hosts Morocco ground out a narrow 1-0 win against Tanzania in Rabat. Buoyed by a passionate home crowd, the Atlas Lions remained patient until a moment of brilliance from Brahim Díaz sealed the victory, fueling hopes of a first AFCON title in nearly 50 years.

Cameroon became the fourth quarter-finalist after a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over South Africa. The five-time champions demonstrated their knockout pedigree, finding a way to win a tightly contested match. Their victory sets up a blockbuster quarter-final showdown with hosts Morocco.

Nigeria also progressed comfortably, as Victor Osimhen's double powered the Super Eagles to a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique.

The Round of 16 will conclude on Tuesday with two more decisive fixtures: Algeria will face DR Congo, while defending champions Côte d’Ivoire take on Burkina Faso. The results will finalise the quarter-final bracket.

AFCON 2025: Qualified Teams and Confirmed Fixtures

The following teams have secured their place in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals: Senegal, Mali, Morocco, Cameroon, Egypt, and Nigeria.

The quarter-final matches will be played on Friday, January 9, and Saturday, January 10. The confirmed ties so far are: Mali vs. Senegal – Friday, January 9 and Cameroon vs. Morocco – Friday, January 9.
