AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani has made it clear that only three points against Gor Mahia will keep them in the title race.

Leopards missed a chance to go ahead of Gor Mahia on the table following a 3-0 humbling by Kenya Police on Saturday, the loss leaving K’Ogalo two points ahead and with a game in hand.

With Gor Mahia playing Bandari on Sunday, they can open up a five-point gap and take it to eight if they silence Ingwe in the Mashemeji Derby on April 26 but Ambani remains defiant that his side is still very much alive.

“Defence was an issue today but those are things that happen in a game. They [players] have been giving us points so we encourage them and I believe they will keep giving us points,” Ambani told Azam TV.

“We must look at how we will win the derby as that is our next option. The players must also know at least, it is not all lost, there is another day and we are still in the race,” he emphasised.

Leopards missed winger James Kinyanjui in the match which denied them an extra spark but having conceded all three goals in the first half, Ambani is not blaming the loss on the key absence.

“You cannot be depending on one player, it is bad luck, we are not sure if we would still have lost [with Kinyanjui in the team] so we will keep working and see how it goes,” he further said.

Ambani has a good record in the Mashemeji Derby as he has drawn two and won one as coach of Leopards against Gor Mahia, something he will be looking to protect.
