AFC Leopards Chairman Boniface Ambani Rips Into FKF Over Refereeing Chaos After Gor Mahia Defeat
In the wake of a tension-fueled 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards Chairman and legendary striker Boniface Ambani did not hold back.
In a post on his Facebook page, Ambani turned his fire away from his players and directly toward the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership.
Ambani, frustrated by the standard of refereeing in the country’s biggest fixture, accused the federation of ignoring the rot that is destroying the game.
He noted that while millions are spent on administrative logistics, the quality of the men in black continues to plummet.
"FKF, your only job is fighting over the money coming into the federation from FIFA, CAF, the Government, etc. You are doing nothing else of substance to improve the levels of officiating and football in this country," Ambani said (The quotes have been translated to English).
"That is the only thing you are good at... You will call for meetings with all the branches nationwide and spend millions on them, but you will never fix the 'big monster' in our football: Poor officiating."
A Crisis of Integrity
The Chairman's critique went beyond simple human error, suggesting a deeper systemic failure. He alleged that the federation’s negligence has left referees vulnerable to corruption, effectively compromising the integrity of the Kenyan Premier League.
"You have turned your referees into match-fixers. Fix the monster in these leagues, or just pack up and leave. The monster is poor refereeing from the grassroots level all the way to the top leagues. You are just sitting idle," he added.
Ambani pointed to the irony of a FIFA-accredited referee being at the centre of the day’s controversies, questioning how the sport can grow when even the highest-ranked officials are failing to maintain order.
With Kenya set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ambani warned that the federation is too distracted by the incoming windfall of AFCON money to care about the current state of the domestic league.
He argued that the optics of officials being pelted with bottles and needing police protection should be a wake-up call.
"The moment your officials have to be escorted from stadiums under tight police security and pelted with bottles, that is when you should understand the state of our football. It has been going on for a long time, yet you just sit there. Now, you are busy planning how the AFCON money will come in so you can finish it off."
A Call for Resignation
Concluding his fiery address, Ambani called out the FKF leadership by name, demanding a total overhaul of the committees that he claims are more focused on internal politics than the sport itself.
"Hussein and company, fix this menace or just go home, man! I will never mince my words. We shall one day fix the menace at that federation... Your committees and discussions are all about who is aligning with whom. Nonsense. Fix this menace or ship out."
