Both sides began their campaigns on a bright note, but the opening five minutes passed without any clear-cut chances.
Gor Mahia soon won a corner but failed to make it count, as Alpha Onyango, Enock Morrison, and Jackson Dwang gradually grew into the game. In the 17th minute, Ebenezer Adukwaw earned a free-kick just outside the box but sent his effort over the bar.
Gor Mahia continued to press, and in the 23rd minute, a well-weighted pass from Sharrif Musa released Patrick Essombe, but the goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny him.
AFC Leopards also had a promising chance, but poor judgment cost them the lead, while Ochuoga’s low cross in the 35th minute was cleared after being pushed out for a corner.
Just before the break, Essombe failed to capitalise on a fine delivery from Ebenezer Adukwaw, leaving the teams level at halftime.
After the restart, both sides showed intent, with AFC Leopards creating early chances but lacking the finishing touch. Gor Mahia responded with increased pressure, using their pace and tactical discipline to control proceedings.
Bryton Onyona picked up a booking in the 49th minute, but Gor Mahia continued to push forward, with Sharrif delivering a cross that Ebenezer Adukwaw headed over in the 59th minute. Moments later, Essombe was forced off for treatment after a heavy challenge.
The breakthrough finally came in the 81st minute, when Alpha Onyango found the back of the net to give Gor Mahia the lead.
AFC Leopards pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Gor Mahia’s defence held firm, securing a 1-0 victory. The win lifts Gor Mahia to 61 points, six ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards.
