31-year-old Barcelona star announces shock retirement

Aleks Abrines, the Mallorca native who turns 32 on August 1st, has decided to end his distinguished career after ten seasons with Barcelona, split across two stints (2012-2016 and 2019-2025).

During his time with the Catalan giants, Abrines played a total of 660 games and won 15 trophies – seven in his first stint and eight in his second.

Abrines retires despite one year remaining on contract

Despite having a contract running until June 30, 2026, the club and player reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract. In an emotional farewell letter to Barcelona fans, Abrines explained his reasons for retiring.

"The time has come to say goodbye. After an intense professional career, where I've experienced things at a fast pace, the moment has arrived to live the life I want, to choose my own path," Abrines said, adding, "And that is to spend more time with my family and loved ones. Basketball, and in this case Barcelona, has given me everything."

With Abrines' retirement, Barcelona bids farewell to one of its most recognizable leaders of the past decade – a player who left a deep mark not only with his performances but also with his dedication to the club and its values.
