The match was the centrepiece of the day, with Mathare United FC facing A Mosquito FC in front of a lively local crowd. After a goalless first half, Mathare United took control in the second period and secured a 3-0 win through goals from Ian Omondi, Elli Asieche, and Harrison Amalemba.

Beyond the result, the event created direct contact between professional footballers and young grassroots players.

Mathare United head coach John Kamau, captain Brian Ochieng’, and midfielder Musa Masika led a mentorship session with A Mosquito FC, sharing practical advice on training, discipline, and progression in football.

For the Kibera-based side, the session offered both exposure and direct access to players and staff with top-level experience. The event also produced a concrete development opportunity. According to Mathare United, several A Mosquito FC players will be invited to train with the club during preseason for further assessment.

Voices from the event

Mathare United captain Brian Ochieng’ said the initiative helped strengthen the connection between football and the local community.

“This project is such an amazing initiative by 1xBet. It’s an amazing opportunity for us to interact with the community, meet new people and build friendships through football. The grassroots team face a lot of challenges, and I hope that the equipment we’ve donated will boost them and encourage the players to continue following their dreams because we also started playing football in such grounds.”

Head coach John Kamau said the event showed both the value of the project and the quality of local players.

“Firstly, a big kudos to 1xBet for honouring their word and continuing with this project. It’s a good feeling to come to the West side of Nairobi and especially Kibera to interact with the community. Through the efforts of our sponsor 1xBet, we have scouted some players from A Mosquito FC players who we will invite to train with us during preseason to assess them further. I believe they have something to offer and can play in the Premier League,” he said.

A 1xBet representative said the project is designed to turn football into practical support for young people.

“The 1xBet Mtaani Project is built around access, guidance, and real opportunity. Football can open doors, but young players also need structure, encouragement, and the right equipment. That is what this initiative is meant to support.”

A Mosquito FC captain Stanley Odhiambo said the experience gave the team motivation and visibility.

“I want to say a big thank you to Mathare United and 1xBet for coming up with this initiative. It’s been a great experience for our young players to play alongside the likes of Masika. This exposure will go a long way in motivating them because it is not common for a Premier League club to make time to come and play and share words of encouragement with clubs in the grassroots,” Stanley Odhiambo said.

A project built around practical community impact

The 1xBet Mtaani Project uses football as a direct community platform, combining matchday activity with mentorship and material support.

By bringing professional players into Kibera, donating equipment, and creating a pathway for selected grassroots players to be assessed further, the second phase of the project delivered outcomes that went beyond the match itself.
