Kenya Lionesses were trounced 22-0 in the final of the Rugby Africa Women's 7s in Nairobi.
Kenya Lionesses Boss Simon Odongo has explained why he has no reason to worry despite the side’s heavy thrashing to South Africa in the final of the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s tournament held at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday.
Odongo, who has been in charge of the side since Dennis Mwanja’s suspension in October, oversaw his charges maintain a near-perfect record to the final, only to fall short to Cecil Africa’s charges in the final.
The Lionesses had produced a strong campaign leading to the final, sweeping through the quarterfinals with a 33–12 win over Zimbabwe before edging rivals Uganda 17–10 in a tense semifinal.

South Africa Outclass Kenya Lionesses in Rugby Africa Women 7s Final to Retain Crown
South Africa dominated Kenya Lionesses in the final of the ongoing Rugby Africa Women's 7s cup in Nairobi to retain their title.
But in the championship match, South Africa were superior from start to finish, scoring through Shiniqua Lamprecht, Simamqele Namba, Patience Mokene and Nadine Roos to silence the home crowd.

Odongo, however, said the heavy loss must be viewed in context.
“We had already qualified for Sevens 2, so we wanted to see who could play with who, where and when, so I think generally, we have achieved our target,” he explained.
He stressed that the team’s long-term preparation plan meant they did not approach the Nairobi final with the same urgency as their opponents.

Sports CS Salim Mvurya has explained whether or not Kenya Lionesses will be rewarded should they clinch the Rugby Africa Women's 7s Cup on Home Soil this weekend.
“We were not planning to peak too early. We want to peak in February because we have a long season next year, and we had an equally long one last year. For us, we wanted to give everyone an equal opportunity to play.”
South Africa Had a Specific Target
South Africa, by contrast, were fighting for the only available ticket to Dubai for the next phase of HSBC Sevens qualification.
“South Africa were hungry for the ticket. Even with Uganda, you could see how heartbroken they were to miss out on the ticket to go to Dubai to fight for 7s III,” Odongo noted.

Work is steadily progressing at Talanta Sports City, with the curtain wall and roof will be fully installed ahead of its expected completion in February 2026 before AFCON 2027.
Despite the defeat, Odongo insists the Lionesses are operating at a higher competitive level than what the continental tournament demanded.
“For us, the ladies are way above this level, so we have nothing to worry about.”
The Lionesses will now shift their focus to the intensified international calendar ahead, with Odongo confident that by February — the peak period of their training cycle — the team will be ready to deliver performances matching their true quality.
