Kenya Lionessess are psyched up to prove critics wrong by qualifying for the World Series despite facing tougher opposition in Poland and Samoa.

Kenya Lionesses head coach Dennis Mwanja believes the team can emulate their male counterparts by one day playing in the World Rugby Sevens Series.

The men’s team was promoted back to the top tier last season after one season in the second tier, and Mwanja believes the women can follow suit.

Lionesses will begin their campaign for Series qualification with the opening two rounds of the Challenger Series matches to be played in South Africa. Kenya has been drawn in pool B and will settle scores against Poland and Samoa for the first two rounds of the qualifiers.

Mwanja reckons that the Lionesses have what it takes to register good results and make the nation proud. After several failed attempts, Mwanja is of the opinion that this is the team's realistic chance to earn qualification.

"It has been our ambition every year to try and qualify for the World Series and I believe we can do it this time. We have a very good squad and we have had ample time to train and prepare," Mwanja told Telecomasia.

"The motivation and belief is there and these are the two ingredients I believe are key for us to progress. The men definitely do inspire us and we want to pick from their motivation and make our own history."

A top four finish in the overall standings of the Challenger Series will see Lionesses advance to the play-off tournament, where the winners qualify for the series.
