He won gold at the just-concluded inaugural Kenya Beach Games.

After his victory at the just-concluded Kenya Beach Games, Mathayo Mahabila is not resting on his laurels as he plots big for the Africa Beach Games slated for June 14 to 23 in Tunisia.

Mahabila, who was taking part in the wrestling category, displayed remarkable results which saw him win a gold medal. The wrestler is keen to leave a mark at the continental show.

“I am working hard and sharpening my skills ahead of the major competition. I want to show the world that as Kenyans, we can also do well in boxing,” he said.

He also extended his gratitude to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K)for organising the event noting that it was one of its kind and he was able to gain more skills.

“I also thank the federation for giving me the chance because they could have easily declined my plea. Winning the gold medal was a big step for me. I prepared well and my hard work paid off well,” he said.

The 25-year-old also noted that one of his goals going forward is to inspire the juniors. He revealed that he has a small team of youngsters that he trains.

Mahabila was also in awe of his coach, Erick Olucho, who pushed him to be a great individual in the sport.

“He has held my hand since I was young and he has also sponsored all the events I attend. From him, I learnt that giving up is never an option,” Mahabila said.
