At the 2019 Africa Beach Games held in Cape Verde, Kenya finished 12th in the medal table with three medals (one silver and two bronze).

Kenya Beach Games technical director John Ogolla is bullish about the teams posting better results at the Africa and World Beach Games slated for June 24-30 in Tunisia and August 5-12 in Indonesia respectively.

Ogolla said the Beach Games to be held at Buntwani Park in Malindi on March 18 and 19 will be used as a buildup for the two global assignments as well as selecting a team for the same.

At the 2019 Africa Beach Games, Kenya finished 12th in the medal table with three medals (one silver and two bronze).

Charles Muneria took the silver for Kenya in the half marathon while the two bronze medals were taken by the men’s doubles tennis and the women’s volleyball.

“Since 2019, I believe the teams have grown and will do well. We have started the preparations early and that’s also an added advantage for us. This will give the federations ample time to prepare the teams well in advance,” Ogolla said.

Speaking on KBC, he added that the venue to host the 15 disciplines is set. The disciplines include volleyball, wrestling, baseball, tennis, karate and 3x3 basketball among others.

He added that they will be restricting the numbers of athletes to participate on the basis of quality of the players.

Ogolla said this will enable them to select the crème de la crème of the players to the global events.

“We also want to urge athletes to take up the beach sports so they can be all rounded. We want to have more people participate and this will help promote sports tourism,” he said.
