The South African gaffer has provided an injury update about his squad, including Masoud Juma and David Sakwa, ahead of their next CHAN 2024 clash against Morocco.

The Harambee Stars have been handed a timely lift ahead of their high-stakes clash with Morocco in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with head coach Benni McCarthy offering a positive update on striker Masoud Juma’s fitness.

McCarthy revealed that Juma’s injury, which kept him out of the second group game against Angola, is not as serious as initially feared.

The forward had started alongside David Sakwa in Kenya’s opening victory over DR Congo but sat out the 1-1 draw with Angola due to precautionary measures.

‘Better Safe Than Sorry’

“The Juma one is not serious but rather safe than sorry,” McCarthy explained after the team’s latest training session.

“We still have a long road ahead and you don’t want to risk forcing players to play. We have 25 capable players in the squad, and if one is unavailable, another can step in and do the job.”

The South African tactician also confirmed there were no fresh injury concerns, only signs of fatigue following two high-intensity matches within four days.

“Playing on Thursday and then on Sunday again, it’s just three days to recover. Another gruesome 90 minutes against a team that will come at you from all angles is tough, but it’s about how we manage the squad,” he said.

Kenya, playing all their Group A matches at Kasarani Stadium, have collected four points from their first two fixtures, leaving them well-placed ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Morocco.

They will close their group campaign against Zambia next Thursday, hoping to seal a spot in the knockout stages.

With Juma edging closer to full fitness and Sakwa also under consideration for a return, McCarthy may have more attacking options at his disposal when the Atlas Lions come calling.
