Kenya’s face an acid test in their quest for COSAFA Cup glory as they start the tournament with a match against seven-time champions Zambia.

Kenya’s Emerging Stars face a major test as they begin their COSAFA Cup campaign against seven-time champions Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Team Kenya is composed of a number of young talented players who are out to make an impression at the tournament of which the East African nation is one of the invited teams.

Kenya have been to the COSAFA Cup once before, making their debut in the 2013 competition that was held in Zambia.

They exited in the first round on that occasion, but showed enough quality to suggest they will be a real force to be reckoned with this time round too.

They opened with a 2-2 draw against Lesotho 11 years ago, before they beat Eswatini 2-0 in a but their hopes of a place in the knockout rounds were dashed when they fell to a 2-1 loss to Botswana.

They will face a new set of teams in this year’s finals having been drawn in Group B along with record seven-time winners Zambia, who have lifted the trophy in the last two years, Zimbabwe and the Comoros Islands.

It means Thursday’s opening match will not be a walk in the park as Zambia have proved to be a hard nut to crack over the years.

Kenya also have not had a good record against the Zambians as in 34 meetings, they have lost 21 and only won six, including the last meeting in October 2020 when they managed a 2-1 victory in a friendly.

Time and where to watch

The match will kick off at 7pm Kenyan time and will be live on SuperSport TV with selected games on SABC and SABC Sport. All games will be streamed live for FREE via FIFA+.
