The Leverkusen city council is exploring ways of bestowing a major honour of Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso after he delivered the club’s first ever Bundesliga title on Sunday.

The Leverkusen city council is exploring the possibility of honouring Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso with a street, square, or road named after him following the club's historic Bundesliga triumph.

Alonso, in his role as coach, led Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, culminating in a momentous 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Fans, buoyed by the team's success, took the initiative to adorn street signs with "Xabi-Alonso-Allee" (Xabi Alonso Avenue) stickers, prompting the city council to consider formalising the gesture.

In addition to the street naming proposal, Alonso, along with sporting director Simon Rolfes and CEO Fernando Carro, is set to be bestowed with honorary citizenship of the city, as announced in a statement on Monday.

Reflecting on the club's historic achievement, Rolfes expressed his elation, admitting to a sleepless night following the title-clinching victory. "I didn't sleep for too long," Rolfes revealed during an interview with broadcasters ZDF. "The celebrations continued late into the night, fueled by the players' euphoria."

While the official Bundesliga trophy presentation is slated for May 18, Leverkusen plans to host their title party at the BayArena on May 26, a day after the German Cup final.

Rolfes highlighted the significance of the upcoming Cup final against Kaiserslautern, emphasising the club's determination to secure another major trophy.

Amidst their domestic triumphs, Leverkusen remains in contention for further success on the European stage.

With an unbeaten streak of 43 matches, including a record-breaking 29-game undefeated run in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen took a significant step towards the Europa League semi-finals with a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their quarter-finals clash against West Ham.

As Leverkusen continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts, the prospect of a treble-winning season looms large, underscoring the club's relentless ambition and formidable form under the guidance of Alonso.
