Despite being benched, Victor Wanyama's presence and popularity were strongly felt as Dunfermline fell 1-0 to Hamilton, whose coach admitted winning over the crowd was key to their victory.

Despite him being benched in Dunfermline Athletic’s match against Hilton on Saturday, Victor Wanyama still won the hearts of fans.

Following the red card incident on his debut against Ayr United, Victor Wanyama was suspended and could not turn up for his side in two of their matches.

In his absence, Dunfermline Athletic won their match against Livingston 1-0 last Wednesday before losing to Hamilton Accies, 1-0 on Saturday.

However, during Saturday’s match, one thing was evident, fans love Victor Wanyama and new coach Neil Lennon.

Hamilton coach John Rankin revealed that they had to first win the hearts of fans at East End Park before winning the actual match, which they eventually accomplished.

Reghan Tumilty struck in the 41st minute to earn his club all three points, moving them two points clear as Dunfermline dropped back into the play-off slot.

"We knew with Neil Lennon coming in, a big personality, big for the crowd, Victor Wanyama coming in, we had to make sure we got the crowd on our side rather than theirs," John Rankin said as quoted by Daily Record.

"We're going to need to get our crowd on our side. We're going to need to show that effort, commitment and desire..."

Hamilton coach revealed that they needed players who would be able to play in front of a sold-out stadium and that was their first step to victory.

He explained that at East End Park, it was highly likely that the stadium would be full and that would put pressure on the players to perform.

He lauded the players for managing the game well and controlling the ball as required of them. The second half was also lively, with Hamilton keeping Dunfermline Athletic on their toes and they almost scored a second goal.

"I thought we did that magnificently. I thought we started the game really well, had to weather the storm, and we did that,” he said.

“At times I think we think we're better than what we are, forget we need to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in, and it was a proper Accies performance."

“We did well, grew into the game and got the goal, in my opinion, in a really good time, just before half-time. It was a good ball into the box, Reghan makes a good run, a great finish, got ourselves 1-0 up, and on his 100th appearance, he deserves that. He has been a magnificent servant for the club so far.”

Dunfermline Athletic face Queen’s Park on Saturday while Hamilton will be up against Partick Thistle over the weekend, both teams looking to escape relegation.
