Wayne Rooney was famously close to joining Chelsea in 2013, but he very nearly would have joined the club in 2004 were it not for an absurd demand by Roman Abramovich and the rest of the club's hierachy.
Wayne Rooney has revealed that he came close to signing for Chelsea in 2004, but turned down the move after being told he would be sent on loan to Middlesbrough.
Speaking on the BBC, the former England and Manchester United striker explained that Everton had already agreed a deal with Chelsea during Euro 2004 without informing him.
“During Euro 2004, Everton had agreed a deal with Chelsea for my transfer, and I didn’t even know about it,” Rooney said.

The Jamaican has been reflecting on retirement, cherishing Jamaica’s support while targeting her final World Championship in Tokyo before farewell.
“Later, my agent spoke with Abramovich and his people. They wanted to sign me and then send me out on loan to Middlesbrough. I thought, ‘No chance.’”
Rooney, then 18, had just burst onto the international stage with four goals for England at the European Championships, attracting interest from across Europe. Chelsea, backed by Abramovich’s millions, were among the frontrunners for his signature.

Usain Bolt Warns Rivals About 'This Young US Girl' Melissa Jefferson-Wooden
Usain Bolt has cautioned Julien Alfred, Dina Asher-Smith, Sha'Carri Richardson and CO to be wary of Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who he believes could be a major threat at the World Championships.
“To be honest, me going to London at that time didn’t make sense at all,” he continued. “The minute I knew Manchester United were interested in me, that was the only place I was going to go.”
Abramovich was reportedly keen on the idea of Rooney working under Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough, but the forward instead joined United in a £27 million deal.
The move proved decisive. Rooney went on to spend 13 years at Old Trafford, making 559 appearances, scoring 253 goals, and providing 142 assists.
He won five Premier League titles, a Champions League, and became Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer.
Rooney retired as one of England’s greatest forwards, but his career trajectory could have been very different had he accepted Abramovich’s offer two decades ago.
