Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has hit out at Arsenal fans for letting the team down during their 1-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has gone in hard on Arsenal supporters after claiming they were “subdued” during their team’s Champions League match at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Arsenal hosted PSG in the first leg of the semi-final at the Emirates Stadium looking to continue the momentum from their big win over Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage but found themselves trailing after four minutes when Ousmane Dembele slotted home past David Raya.

PSG then made life difficult for their hosts and should have added another one at a stunned Emirates which was not as loud as when they beat Real Madrid 3-0 at home early in the month, to the disappointment of Rooney.

“They [PSG] were by far the better team. Tactically they were excellent - they knew when to press and go into a lower block. They could have won by two or three,” Rooney said on Amazon Prime as quoted by Dailymail.

Arsenal fans did not give Gunners lift

“I was a bit disappointed with how they played and the fans as well. Against Madrid they were excellent but today they were subdued and it was an anticlimax. The fans had to be there tonight. On both sides, it wasn’t good enough from Arsenal.”

Rooney, who is United’s all-time top scorer, feels the players needed a major lift from supporters which did not come when they needed it most.

“The players need help. I thought the fan here against Madrid was the best I'd heard it. They gave a massive amount of energy but tonight they didn't give them that same energy - it can be the difference,” he added.

“The fans have been a lot - and I am not blaming them - but if they brought the same energy from Madrid, it could have given them a lift.”

Arsenal now need to overturn the one-goal deficit in Paris next week if they have to make it to their first Champions League final since 2006.
