Victor Wanyama could be given new lease at CF Montreal after one of his competitors requested to leave the club over a contract standoff.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama could be given new lease of life at CF Montreal after midfielder Mathieu Choiniere requested to leave the club.

Wanyama has become a bench warmer at Montreal since the middle of last season with former coach Hernan Losada and his successor Laurent Courtois preferring a midfield of Canadian stars Choiniere and Samuel Piette with youngster Nathan Saliba also ahead of the Kenyan player.

However, a door could open for Wanyama to enjoy more regular playing time after MLS All-Star Choiniere reportedly requested a trade from his boyhood club, as per The Athletic.

Choiniere’s contract expires at the end of next season and he had been in talks with the club for an extension. After months with no resolution, those discussions are dead and Choiniere requested a trade.

Several MLS clubs inquired with Montreal about Choiniere’s availability before the end of the primary transfer window. The Athletic reports that there is expected to be a list of suitors looking to acquire him this summer.

Choiniere, 25, enjoyed a breakout year in 2023 and has continued from strength to strength this season.

The versatile midfielder, who has made 126 appearances for the club, has started all nine games for Montreal this season and his departure would be a blow to Courtois.

That would, however, be good news for Wanyama who is yet to start a game this season, having made four substitute appearances this term.

Wanyama will hope that it happens soon so that he does not have to wait until next season.

That might not be very good news for Wanyama whose current deal expires at the end of this season and would have to sign a new one to enjoy some extended spell in the team if Choiniere departs.

The former Tottenham and Southampton midfielder signed two-year contract extension through the 2024 Major League Soccer season and based on his current predicament, there are no guarantees that he will be offered a new one.
