K’Ogalo announced massive ticket revenue from the Mashemeji Derby marking a significant financial improvement despite suffering a painful defeat.

Gor Mahia have revealed that they collected a whopping Ksh 7 million from ticket sales during Sunday’s high-stakes Mashemeji Derby at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The impressive financial windfall serves as a significant consolation for the record Kenyan champions, who suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat on the pitch to their eternal rivals, AFC Leopards.

The match, which was the 98th instalment of the famous derby, saw the stadium filled to the rafters as the Green Army and Ingwe faithful descended upon the capital for the biggest fixture in the Kenyan football calendar.

In a formal statement released after the match, the club’s treasurer, Gerphas Okuku, broke down the exact figures, confirming that the club banked exactly Ksh 7,011,500 from the day's gate takings.

“We collected KSh 7,011,500 from ticket sales during today’s derby match at Nyayo Stadium. We sincerely thank our fans for the outstanding turnout and unwavering support,” he said.

The scene outside the stadium was just as chaotic and vibrant as the one inside as long queues of supporters were still snaking around the perimeter of the Nyayo National Stadium, waiting patiently to be admitted into the venue.

A Gargantuan Improvement

The figures released by Okuku represent a massive improvement from the last time Gor Mahia hosted the Mashemeji Derby.

In June of this year, K’Ogalo took the match to the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, a move that yielded a measly Ksh 2,152,700. That particular fixture was marred by logistical challenges; although the stadium was full to capacity, the low revenue was attributed to a porous entry system that allowed many ticketless fans to access the venue, denying the club millions in potential revenue.

Comparatively, the figures show that the derby remains a goldmine for whichever side plays host at the Nyayo National Stadium.

In the first leg of the derby held on March 30, AFC Leopards, acting as the home team, collected Ksh 7,395,000. Gor Mahia’s collection of just over Ksh 7 million shows that the fixture consistently generates high revenue when organized in Nairobi, with both clubs benefiting from the fierce loyalty of their respective fanbases.

Embracing Digital Solutions

Just like other major teams in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, K’Ogalo have transitioned to online ticketing systems.

This modernization is designed to avoid cases of unscrupulous individuals pocketing money through cash payments on matchdays, a vice that has plagued Kenyan football for decades.

The seamless validation of digital tickets meant that the revenue collected on Sunday reflects a truer picture of the club's fan power.
