This is how FKF struck another record-breaking broadcasting partnership with KBC just over two and a half months after partnering with Azam TV
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Thursday made history by agreeing on a broadcasting deal for the Premier League with KBC worth 1.2 million USD (Ksh 190 million) making it the first time that the league will be broadcasted by two different partners.
Back in September, Tanzanian broadcasting company Azam TV also penned a pay-tv deal to air FKFPL matches, which now means that the top-flight league will receive wide coverage and earn broadcasting revenue.
However, it took until the end of November for a deal with KBC to be struck, despite rumors that both deals would be struck at around the same time.

KBC secures FTA and radio rights for the FKF Premier League, promising significant financial support and increased coverage for Kenyan football.
It has now been unveiled by FKF president Nick Mwendwa how all the parties involved (Azam TV, KBC, the Sports and ICT ministries as well as FKF) reached an amicable agreement to have both broadcasting corporations air Kenyan football matches.
“We have spent several hours negotiating this and I think at some point it leaked out and I had to say, ‘no it is not true’. I have been traversing offices trying to get it over the line,” Mwendwa said.
“We did a deal for pay tv with Azam, so Azam TV is our pay TV partner. When we were doing that, most pay TV partners do not allow you to air free-to-air deals, but since we had been talking with CS Ababu Namwamba for a long time about this idea, we made sure the contract we signed with Azam allowed us to have free-to-air TV.”

FKFPL Gor Mahia legend Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo discusses importance of FKFPL having a broadcaster
Omollo has reminisced back to the days when SuperSport used to broadcast the league, claiming it would help him analyse games in his days coaching several clubs.
“The deal we have signed is 750,000 dollars (Ksh182.4 million) for free-to-air and 500,000 dollars (Ksh 114 million) for radio, that means all their stations, vernacular, English and kiswahili, they will have the freedom for free to commentate, to have highlights, to discuss, to comment.
“That is so powerful and we know how powerful radio is. This deal will give every club 10 million shillings per year, which is a record that has never been done.”
Officials of the the FKF Women Premier League, as well as the National Super League will get stable incomes from the money generated from the package.

“This combination of the KBC deal and the Azam deal has allowed us to get 10 million for clubs. I know you will say that it is not what we want, but it has never been done and it is the first time, and I want to thank everybody who have ensured this happens.
“More than that, we will be able to help our Women’s Premier League by paying for our referees, and also our NSL referees will be paid for this kitty.”
The deal will also see clubs receive various price money packages that will be distributed in order of the teams’ final positions in the league standings.
“We had an exchange with the ministry’s team about, ‘what about the team that wins’?
“It was a long conversation and I think the CS and PS had views, and we settled on the winner taking home five million, but that is not the big point, the big point is that 11 million shillings will be prorated according to where you are on the standings to the other 17 teams.
“We will have a gala night and we will have awards like we have been traditionally - best player, most promising player - all that at the end of the season. All that has been enabled by doing this deal."
