Several fans were rumoured to have lost their lives during Nigeria's crucial AFCON 2023 semifinal win over South Africa

The encounter saw Nigeria taking the lead with a penalty by Troost-Ekong, but a late spot-kick from South Africa's Teboho Mokoena pushed the match into extra time before substitute Kelechi Iheanacho then confidently converted the decisive penalty kick in a shootout, propelling Nigeria to their first AFCON final since 2013.

Four fans reported dead during Nigeria vs South Africa match

The celebration of the momentous occasion of reaching the AFCON final after it emerged that up to four football fans had reportedly died during the tense affair. 

The Super Eagles took to Twitter to express their sorrow, stating, "During the course of our semi-final match, we tragically lost a few supporters. In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments. 

As the Nigeria vs South Africa match unfolded, they were lost in the thrill of the game, unaware of the looming danger. May their souls find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings. Rest in peace."

Among those who reportedly passed away during the match was Nigerian businessman Chief Osondu Nwoye, the CEO of Groupe Auto Promotion, who collapsed after a goal was cancelled. 

Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of KWASU, also died while watching the game, along with former Nigerian lawmaker Dr. Cairo Ojougboh and a Nigerian graduate and Corps member, simply identified as Samuel.
