Standard Chattered in collaboration with English Premier League giants Liverpool is training 35 local coaches, focusing on enhancing their skills to empower girls through football.

Standard Chartered, in collaboration with Liverpool Football Club (LFC), is hosting an on-going three-day ‘Play On: Train the Trainer’ event in Nairobi.

The initiative is designed to train 35 local coaches, focusing on enhancing their skills to empower girls through football.

The programme targets both the Bank’s Futuremakers coaches and Nairobi-based coaches of girls' football, aiming to equip them with the necessary tools to encourage girls in their communities to succeed in sports.

Partnering with LFC Soccer Schools and the LFC Foundation, Standard Chartered has developed a tailored coaching curriculum. The training includes sessions conducted by experts experienced in delivering women and girls’ programmes.

Joyce Kibe, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing at Standard Chartered, commented, “Our goal is to make a meaningful impact on our communities. This partnership aligns with our commitment to support sustainable social and economic development, inspiring more girls to succeed in the long run.”

Recent studies highlight several challenges that lead many girls to abandon sports during their teenage years, such as lack of access, safety concerns, social stigma, and limited positive role models. Conversely, sport has been found to impart valuable life skills, including leadership, resilience, and teamwork.

The ‘Play On’ curriculum, taught by Liverpool FC coaches, covers various topics like ‘Person-Centred Approach’, ‘Barriers to Participation’, ‘Mental Health & Wellbeing’, ‘Balancing Life’, and ‘Empowering Women in Leadership’.

Following the training, participants are tasked with applying their newfound knowledge to develop session plans based on the Play On curriculum. These plans will then be implemented in their respective communities, targeting girls' participation in sports.

Enouce Ndeche, CEO of Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP), a local NGO partner of Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, expressed his belief in sports as a catalyst for social and economic change, especially for underprivileged individuals.

Steven Gillespie, Senior Programme Manager of International Academies at LFC, described the programme's success, emphasizing LFC’s coaching philosophy that prioritizes the individual over the player.

Karl Carney, Department Manager, Sport & Physical Activity at LFC Foundation, added, “As coaches, we’re not just teaching football. We’re instilling important values that enable young people to succeed on and off the pitch.”

The ‘Play On: Train the Trainer’ initiative was initially launched in Pretoria, South Africa, in November 2023, benefiting 34 Futuremakers coaches who have since trained 3,600 girls.

Standard Chartered and Liverpool FC introduced their joint ‘Play On’ campaign in May 2023 to inspire, empower, and educate girls in sports, aiming to address the significant dropout rate among girls in sports by age 14.

After a successful digital awareness campaign featuring LFC First Team players and Manager, the ‘Play On: Train the Trainer’ programme was developed to offer practical, in-person training in markets where Standard Chartered operates alongside Futuremakers coaches and female participants.
