The Real Madrid star believes the country is not a supporter of racism in any regard
Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal has come forward to refute claims of racism within Spain, asserting that the country maintains a high level of integration.
His statements come ahead of a tribute match against Brazil, organized in response to recent incidents involving Vinicius Junior, aimed at combating racism.
Setting the Stage for Anti-Racism: Spain vs. Brazil
As Spain prepares to face Brazil in a symbolic match against racism, Carvajal emphasizes the importance of addressing such issues. Despite recent controversies involving Vinicius Junior, Carvajal notes that the Real Madrid dressing room provides support to the Brazilian forward in combating racism.
"It is an ideal setting and match to face the fight against racism. Vinicius speaks about it with his intimate circle, we help him as much as we can in the dressing room."
Spain: A Nation of Integration
In his defense of Spain, Carvajal highlights his own upbringing in Leganes, underscoring the diverse environment he grew up in. He contends that while instances of anger-fueled behavior may occur in football settings, it does not represent the broader societal attitude towards racism.
“I don’t think Spain is a racist country, I think we have a very high level of integration. I come from Leganes and I have grown up with kids from all countries."
No Holds Barred: Carvajal's Approach to the Game
Ahead of facing Vinicius Junior on the pitch, Carvajal asserts that he will maintain his aggressive style of play. Despite the friendly nature of the match, Carvajal acknowledges the need to play with intensity while avoiding excessive risks. He praises Vinicius for his resilience in overcoming criticism and emerging as a leader for Real Madrid.
“You can injure yourself more by tackling weaker than by going in strong. For my part, I will not hold anything back. Vinicius surprised me for the better and the improvement he has shown has been spectacular. He is now one of our leaders.”
Challenges Faced by Vinicius
Carvajal acknowledges the challenges faced by Vinicius Junior, particularly regarding criticism and instances of racism directed towards him. While the abuse faced by Vinicius may not always be explicitly racist, Carvajal recognizes the need to address such behaviour within the football community.
Certainly, Vinicius received no shortage of abuse during his first couple of years at Los Blancos, but it was either not racist or not picked up. That went back to his profligacy in front of goal, something that has lamentably given way to numerous incidents of racism directed against Vinicius.
