All teams in the promotion race who played on Saturday claimed victory.

Shabana FC consolidated their position at the top of the National Super League (NSL) table with a 1-0 victory over Kibera Black Stars, although Murang’a Seal stayed hot on their heels with a 2-0 win over Mwatate United.

At the other end of the log, there was disappointment for Kisumu All Stars, who fell 2-1 to fourth-placed Mara Sugar.

The battle at the top, though, failed to take a new twist, with Shabana claiming a hard-fought 1-0 win over a stubborn Kibera Black Stars.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was among the high-level dignitaries who graced the match at the Simeon Nyachae Stadium in Kisii.

Red-hot striker Paul Ongechi scored the only goal of the game in the 45th minute, taking his tally to 13 with six matches remaining until the end of the season.

That win took Shabana to 60 points from 26 games played this season while Black Stars remained stagnant at the 11th position with 28 points from 25 games.

Meanwhile, Elvis Mafuta’s reign as Mwatate United head coach got off to a nightmare start with a 2-0 loss to Murang'a Seal at St Sebastian Park in Murang’a.

John Kiplagat scored the opener at the half hour mark before Fabian Adikiny added the second two minutes later.

Unsurprisingly, there was a fierce reaction at halftime, with the Mwatate players booed off the pitch.

The second half saw fewer chances created at either end despite Mafuta making a raft of changes in the battle to find the equalizing goals.

Elsewhere, a brace from Philemon Nyakwaka inspired Mara Sugar to a 2-1 win over Kisumu All Stars at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

In the first fifteen minutes, neither team seemed able to make any clinical decisions in the final third, which resulted in much of the play being congested in the midfield.

The first half only produced one shot on goal, and that happened to be the game’s opening goal in the 26th minute when Nyakwaka turned home a David Owino pass to make it 1-0.

Despite being on the back foot Mara Sugar went into the break leading, as they took their only chance in front of goal and were the happier of the two teams at halftime.

The second 45 was a much better affair and saw Kisumu All Stars applying pressure from the word go, and their efforts were paid with an equalizer a minute after the hour mark.

However, Mara Sugar did take the lead in the 76th minute when Nyakwaka grabbed his second of the afternoon with an expert finish after latching onto a through ball to make it 2-1.
