Shabana Captain on how Returning to Gusii Stadium Massively Contributed to Impressive Season

Shabana were allowed to host home matches at Gusii Stadium this season, after the arena was reopened following a year of renovations.

Shabana captain George Onyango has explained how being allowed to host home games at Gusii Stadium this season largely contributed to their good form and eventual finish in the FKF Premier League league this season.

When the club won back promotion to the Premier League in 2023, Gusii Stadium had to be closed for renovations for a year, which forced them to have to host their games at a relatively unfamiliar Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay.

This made it difficult for fans to attend games every week due to the travel costs it would have taken to travel from Kisii to Homa Bay, and as the season progressed, fewer and fewer fans attended games.

However, in 2025, the club has seen the stadium consistently filled to the brim, and they have registered strong home form as a result, which largely helped them consolidate a fifth place finish.

“It has been a great season, to be honest,” Onyango told Mozzart Sport. “Playing at home in front of our fanbase, which was a missing spark last season, truly worked the magic. That shift alone gave us an extra push.”

In 2025, with Gusii Stadium back in use, the club consistently attracted large home crowds. The vocal support translated into strong home form and a sense of unity between players and fans.

“The fans walked with us, home and away,” Onyango added. “We felt their presence, and that connection gave us strength. They made us feel part of something bigger, and that translated directly into results on the pitch.”

Onyango: Technical Bench and New Players Elevated Our Team

Beyond the stadium return, Onyango also praised the club’s smart recruitment and technical bench for turning things around after a rough start to the season.

Key signings included Maxwell Mulili (AFC Leopards), Atariza Meja (Bandari), Elvis Osok (Posta Rangers), Darius Msagha (Sofapaka), Steve Ochieng (Ulinzi Stars), and youthful forward Austin Odongo, among others.

Mid-season additions such as Keith Imbali, Moses Shikanda, and Douglas Mokaya also proved instrumental.

“The club’s effort to bring in quality players solved major gaps we had. The new signings provided depth and competitiveness, which gave us an edge,” he said.

He also hailed the work of coaches Peter Okidi and Bernard Mwalala for instilling belief and a winning mentality.

“When we started, we had a raw and shaky beginning,” Onyango admitted. “But the changes the management made worked wonders.”

With renewed momentum and a solid foundation at Gusii Stadium, Shabana FC now looks ahead with optimism, hoping to build on this season’s success in the next campaign.
