AFC Leopards begin their Elijah Lidonde Cup defense against Mulembe United in a four-team tournament

Reigning champions AFC Leopards are all set to kick off their title defense this Saturday in the highly-anticipated Elijah Lidonde Cup.

The thrilling four-team football tournament will take place at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County.

The Elijah Lidonde Cup brings together top-tier and National Super League (NSL) teams offering fans an exciting spectacle of football excellence.

Alongside AFC Leopards, the participating teams include Mulembe United, Kakamega Homeboyz, and the 2022 finalist, Nzoia Sugar.

In the opening match of the tournament, AFC Leopards will lock horns with NSL side Mulembe United.

Both teams come into this encounter facing challenges in their respective leagues.

AFC Leopards have struggled, managing to secure just two victories in the FKF Premier League's opening 15 games, while Mulembe United have recorded four wins in the NSL's first 14 matches.

Following the high-stakes opener, fans will be treated to another exciting clash as Kakamega Homeboyz, currently sitting fourth in the FKF Premier League, takes on fellow top-tier side Nzoia Sugar, who find themselves at the bottom of the league table.

The kickoff for this fixture is scheduled for 3:00 PM, and it presents an opportunity for Nzoia Sugar to make a statement against a formidable opponent.

The climax of the Elijah Lidonde Cup will occur on Sunday, with the winners of the respective semi-final games vying for glory in the final showdown at Bukhungu Stadium.

The stakes are high in this competition with the winners of the tournament walking away with a handsome reward of Ksh.1 million, while the runners-up will take home Ksh.500,000.

The third-place playoff winner will secure Ksh.250,000, and the fourth-placed team will not leave empty-handed, receiving Ksh.200,000.

But it is not just football on the menu for fans attending the Elijah Lidonde Cup. The organizers have arranged a spectacular lineup of artists to entertain the crowd from 10 AM onwards at Bukhungu Stadium.

Emmanuel Musindi, Ainea Mukaisi of Ingwe Isukuti Group, David Barasa of Webuye Jua Kali Band, and Julius Itenya of Super Phonotex Band are all expected to grace the stage with their musical talents, creating a festive atmosphere for fans to enjoy.

Last year's Elijah Lidonde Cup saw AFC Leopards emerge victorious after defeating Nzoia Sugar 8-7 in a nail-biting penalty shootout at Bukhungu Stadium.

Both teams had battled to a goalless draw in regular time, and it was AFC Leopards' goalkeeper, Maxwell Mulili, who played a pivotal role in securing their triumph.
