After being sacked by Wydad Casablanca, Rulani Mokwena has joined MC Alger, aiming to win domestic and continental titles.

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has finally found a new home ahead of the 2025/26 season after months of speculation about his next move.

The highly-rated tactician has been unveiled as the new head coach of Algerian giants MC Alger, marking another chapter in his burgeoning coaching career.

Mokwena had been out of work since parting ways with Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca at the end of May, following a single season in charge.

Despite a respectable campaign, he opted not to extend his stay, sparking widespread interest from several top African clubs eager to secure his services.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns boss was linked to multiple high-profile vacancies in recent weeks, including reigning African champions Pyramids FC of Egypt, Zamalek, and Tanzanian giants Young Africans.

Ultimately, Mokwena has decided to remain in North Africa, where he will now look to build on MC Alger’s recent domestic triumph.

Confirming his appointment, MC Alger released a statement welcoming the 37-year-old to their ranks:

"Rhulani Mokwena is the new coach of the dean of the Algerian clubs. Rhulani Mokwena! Welcome to Mouloudia."

Big Expectations After Title-Winning Campaign

Mokwena arrives at a club brimming with confidence after sealing the 2024/25 Algerian Ligue 1 title under Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia.

The title-winning tactician, however, surprised many by departing the Mouloudia at the end of the season. That decision opened the door for Mokwena, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most promising young coaches, to step in and take the reins.

Nicknamed “the Mouloudia,” MC Alger have set their sights firmly on continental success. They will participate in the upcoming CAF Champions League, where Mokwena will be tasked with delivering the trophy that eluded him during his time with Sundowns.

Despite building a formidable squad in South Africa, he fell short of conquering Africa’s premier club competition, an experience that will no doubt fuel his ambition in Algeria.

MC Alger’s hierarchy are believed to have been impressed by Mokwena’s tactical acumen and reputation for meticulous preparation.

The club is also understood to have promised significant backing in the transfer market as they look to reinforce their squad for the continental campaign.

Renewed Rivalry in the Algerian Top Flight

The appointment also sets up an intriguing subplot in the Algerian Ligue 1, where Mokwena will renew acquaintances—and rivalries—with familiar faces.

Chief among them is Sead Ramovic, who currently manages CR Belouizdad. The pair have a long history of heated encounters dating back to their days in South Africa, when Ramovic was in charge of TS Galaxy and Mokwena led Sundowns.

Their touchline exchanges often grabbed headlines and added extra spice to their meetings, something Algerian football fans can now look forward to witnessing again.

Mokwena will also cross paths with Josef Zinnbauer, another respected tactician who guides JS Kabylie. The trio’s presence promises to elevate the competitiveness and profile of Algeria’s top flight, as three of the continent’s most outspoken and driven coaches go head-to-head.
