AFC Leopards signed Posta Rangers' defender Ken Owino for a significant fee.

AFC Leopards are no strangers to paying big transfer fees for their intended transfer targets, and they have once again made headlines with their latest acquisition.

Last week, the club has successfully signed Ken Owino, the highly-rated defender from Posta Rangers, marking a major coup in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

The deal, which culminated in Owino signing a long-term contract on Friday, came after intense negotiations between AFC Leopards and Posta Rangers.

Initially, in early January, rumors swirled about Owino's potential transfer, with Posta Rangers reportedly demanding upwards of Ksh 10 million for his release.

However, the final figure settled upon is believed to be around Ksh 800,000, a tad lower than Rangers' initial ask of Ksh 1 million, as reported by Pepeta.

Despite the hefty price tag, AFC Leopards demonstrated their resolve and financial commitment, agreeing to pay the amount in two installments, a proposal initially resisted by Rangers.

The deadlock was finally broken last week, paving the way for Owino's medicals and imminent integration into the Leopards' squad.

His arrival at AFC Leopards is highly anticipated, with arrangements for his official unveiling already underway.

Owino, a central defender, brings a wealth of experience to his new club, having had an extensive career in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

His journey has seen him don the jerseys of several clubs, including Leopards' rivals Gor Mahia and Western Stima, and the now-defunct Sony Sugar.

Under the guidance of coach Tomas Trucha, Owino is expected to play a pivotal role in the team's defense, especially in the second leg of the league and beyond.

His addition to the squad is timely, as AFC Leopards continue to eye improvements in various areas, with a specific focus on roping in an attacking midfielder, as per Trucha's strategy for the team.

The club's ongoing activities in the transfer market also include the expected loan departures of striker Yasin Sije and midfielders Giovanni Lukumwa and Shawn Oloo.

Owino's defensive prowess, paired with his teammate Musa, has been instrumental in making John Kamau's side one of the toughest to score against in the league.

Together, they have played a crucial role in Posta Rangers conceding only 11 goals this season, the second-best defensive record in the division, trailing just behind Gor Mahia's seven.
