‘Respect the Journey’ - Ex-Gor Mahia Striker Hits Out at Criticism of Kenyan Players Who Fail Abroad

With a number of Kenyan players being heavily criticised when they fail abroad, an ex-striker is calling for more respect and support to boost their morale.

Over the years, a number of Kenyan players have been leaving the country in a bid to join paid ranks abroad but not all are successful.

While some make it and even move on to the better-paying leagues and teams, some return as quickly as they left.

Whether it is the weather that they find to be problematic, tactics, not fitting into the team or worse just rogue agents setting them up to fail, Kenya is littered with players who thought they had secured great opportunities overseas just for them to run into headwinds.

When they come back, they are labeled flops by fans who might not know the backstory and former Gor Mahia and Sofapaka striker Ronald Okoth is saddened by the treatment which he feels is discouraging to the players.

Concerns Over Criticism of Failed Stars Abroad

“Our local KE players chasing careers outside our borders face challenges many never see,” Okoth posted on X. “Instead of constant negativity when things don’t go well, we should ask ourselves why do a section of fans want to see them fail so badly? Criticise performances, yes but respect the journey,” the ex- Mathare United forward further wrote.

Okoth’s sentiments mirror the views of Kenya Police and Harambee Stars defender Abud Omar who in a recent interview expressed his disappointment at a section of fans who hit out at players who do not last long abroad.

With the Kenyan league not paying well and some teams not even honouring contractual agreements with their players, most look for next available opportunity out of the country not just to further their careers but to also boost their bank balance.

This will continue even with bad experiences of some abroad as the FKF Premier League has become less attractive to players unlike a decade ago when it was one of the go-to places in Africa.
