Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is reportedly close to landing a new club in Qatar but what is the connection between the rumoured team and Dennis Oliech?

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is reported to be close to sealing a deal with Qatari club Al Arabi.

Olunga is a free agent after ending his hugely successful four-and-a-half-year stay at Doha-based giants Al Duhail and a number of clubs in Asia have been linked to him.

However, recent reports claim Al Arabi are leading the race to sign the Kenyan striker with a deal reportedly imminent in what wou;d offer the 31-year-old a chance to continue playing in a familiar environment.

According to Tembah Football, Olunga will move to Al Arabi while Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, whose contract is ending at the club this month, is wanted by Al Duhail.

Moving to Al Arabi will offer Olunga a chance to continue breaking records in Qatar as he is Al Duhai’s record goalscorer after managing 130 goals during his stay in Doha but also, he has a chance to follow in the footsteps of Kenyan legend Dennis Oliech.

Al Arabi are the club that offered Oliech a chance to join paid ranks abroad when he signed as a teenager from Mathare United in 2003.

Will Olunga Become the Second Kenyan to Play for Al Arabi?

Michael Olunga is Al Duhail's all-time top scorer.

The following year, Oliech made news when it was reported that he had been offered close to Ksh200 million to switch nationalities from Kenya to Qatar, after his immense talent attracted the Asian nation.

However, the young striker turned down the opportunity, choosing to stay loyal to Kenya, and spent two years at Al Arabi where he scored 27 league goals in 47 games, before moving to Europe.

Oliech left Al Arabi for Nantes in 2005 as one of the most talented young strikers on the planet, having been named among world's most promising young players a year before.

However, while Oliech joined as a young and raw talent, Olunga would be signing as a proven player, if the deal goes through, as he has been among the leading strikers in Qatar since joining Al Duhail in January 2021.

Olunga scored 20 or more goals for three straight seasons, winning the Golden Boot Award twice, and will not need to prove anything for the highly ambitious club, who are hoping to challenge for titles next season, despite a ninth-place finish in the 12-team league last term.
