Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is set to become a free agent after announcing he was leaving Al Duhail in May.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga had sent Djurgaden FC fans into a frenzy earlier this month when he posted a nostalgic photo from his time in Stockholm.

Olunga, who launched his professional career with the side after leaving Gor Mahia at the start of 2016, has since dominated in countries like Spain, Japan and now Qatar - a country where he looks like he could prolong his stay in despite leaving Al Duhail at the End of May.

A report from Tembah Football claimed that the former Girona Striker is on the verge of signing for Al Arabi.

However, Djurgaden fans had expressed excitement when, on June 9, Olunga posted a picture of himself in Stockholm  along with the cryptic caption: “It’s time for…”

The post, published on Facebook, sparked heavy speculation among supporters that the 31-year-old could be on the verge of returning to the Allsvenskan club where he made his name nearly a decade ago.

Andersson Responds: Olunga is Not Coming Back

Speaking to Sportbladet, Djurgården Sporting Director Bosse Andersson moved swiftly to dismiss the rumors.

“We have contact. I spoke to him yesterday (June 11th)  — but he is not in Stockholm. It’s impossible,” Andersson stated.

When asked about the social media post, Andersson was firm in his denial:

“Maybe it was time to call me? What do I know. But I can promise you, he’s not in Stockholm.”

Olunga’s contract with Qatari side Al-Duhail SC is set to expire on June 30, adding fuel to the speculation. Still, Andersson believes a return to Djurgården is unlikely.

“Djurgården is dear to his heart. This is where his journey began and he’s very grateful for that,” Andersson said. “But I don’t think he’ll come back. He’s an attractive player with many options.”

A Prolific Career Since Leaving Sweden

After his breakout 2016 season with Djurgården — where he scored 12 goals in 28 matches — Olunga moved on to clubs in China, Japan, and most recently Qatar, where he netted 123 goals in 135 appearances for Al-Duhail.

Despite his success abroad, Andersson reiterated he is staying realistic:

“I’m up to date and I’ve spoken to him. I would be surprised if he plays in Djurgården.”

While fans may still dream of a fairytale return, the club’s official stance is clear: Michael Olunga’s time at Djurgården remains a cherished chapter — but a new one is unlikely to begin this summer.
