Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga led his team Al Duhail to a win in the final match of the season but it was not enough to win the Qatar Stars League title.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga’s hopes of winning a second league title in Qatar went up in smoke on Friday when he led his team Al Duhail to a win but missed out on the crown.

Al Duhail were locked in a tight title battle with leaders and reigning champions Al Sadd ahead of the final match of the season with the latter holding a two-point lead.

Al Sadd therefore needed to beat Al Ahli to be crowned champions while Al Duhail were hoping that the holders would lose and they beat bottom-placed Al Khor to reclaim the crown that they last won in 2023.

However, that was not to be as Al Sadd put on a masterclass against fourth-placed Al Ahli, thrashing them 5-0 to retain their league crown.

Olunga, however, ended the season with a smile as he scored the only goal in Al Duhail’s 1-0 win against Al Khor, which took his league tally for the season to 12, although he missed out on the golden boot award.

The Kenyan international has not had a prolific season by his very high standards with his goal ending a run of three games without scoring.

Olunga has ended the season with 13 goals across all competitions, the lowest since joining Al Duhail in January 2021, after managing 30, 34 and 22 in the last three seasons.

The striker also ended the season, which promised so much early on, without a trophy and will look to use that disappointment as fuel to fire his team to glory next term.
