The head coach reveals he had held talks with Bandari and some other unnamed clubs, but decided to stay put at Tusker.

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano has revealed why he decided to stay put with the Brewers after rumors speculated that he was set to leave the club at the end of last season.

The veteran gaffer held talks with Bandari and some other clubs, including foreign, as his contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

However, he decided to stay put at the club and will be the man in charge to steer the club moving forward for the foreseeable future.

Matano described himself as “being like a beautiful girl” who was sought after, as he said he had a lot of concrete offers to join other teams but was motivated by the desire to make amends for the near-misses last season.

“Rumors must be there and I am a coach,” he said. “A beautiful girl must be sought after. I am also like a beautiful girl (in coaching terms), of course, I will also be sought after,” he added.

“It was not just Bandari, there were other teams outside as well, but I have been here (for a long time) and want to leave the place when I have done something.

“As a coach, you have to mould and build a strong team. When you leave, you have to leave a strong team so that people can remember you. I thought I better continue staying here and build a strong team because Tusker is not just a team, but a brand.”

Last season, Tusker missed the title by one point, and lost the FKF Cup final to Kakamega Homeboyz, subjecting them to a second season with no continental football, after they were denied a ticket to the CAF Champions League in 2022 owing to the year-long FIFA-imposed ban on the country’s football.

“When you leave the company, you should do better. There is no need to leave Tusker when there is no trophy. I also want to be happy, and that is why I thought so, with the support from my manager, who said ‘you cannot leave Tusker when they are down’.

“I want to leave when Tusker are top but not now. I have to fight on to make sure that these boys I am bringing through are nurtured to play for the team, and also for the future.”

the Brewers are set to depart for Arusha, Tanzania to continue stepping up their pre-season preparations ahead of the 2023/2024 season.
